Yves Cuilleron les Vignes d'a cote Syrah 2018 from the northern Rhone
Yves Cuilleron is the master winemaker who really opened my eyes to what great "Syrah" (AKA Shiraz) from the northern Rhône is all about: perfume and savoury elegance. However, the prices of all his other Syrah wines from big name appellations (Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, etc) have gone completely insane in recent years so I was delighted to find that this, his entry level northern Rhône "vin de pays", really encapsulates all that I had ever loved about his top Shiraz wines but for a fraction of the price. This is not a complex wine but sounds a perfect and pure note of Syrah's savoury perfume, really the essence of what makes it a great variety in my opinion, coupled to a palate that is medium bodied ("burgundian" like top Pinot Noir), elegant, and long. This is a beautiful Shiraz solo, rather than the full orchestra. Drink now to 2025.
