Tormaresca Primitivo 2017 from Puglia
Puglia is Italy's most improved wine region. 30 years ago, wine quality here wasn't just low, it was so low that it was an open secret that most of the region's production was sold without any statement of its origins. It just disappeared in the night to add colour and body to wines from other parts of Italy (Chianti?!). We will never know the full story. Suffice to say though that wine from Puglia has not only lost and buried its reputation for dodgy blending material but it has also managed to reinvent itself as Italy's pre-eminent maker of fruit-forward, crowd-pleasing, varital wines of polish and expression. And they're not just one-dimensional fruit bombs: while they are undeniably fruitiliscious, they still look every inch like fine wines from Italy and they also have more-than-respectable levels of medium-bodied finesse and structure. So if you want to know what Primitivo from Puglia looks like in its most defined and lip-smacking form, then look no further. This is a very safe purchase. It's even under screw cap.
