Domaine de Bila-Haut "Occultum lapidem", Cotes du Roussillon Villages 2013

I worked as cellar manager at the Bila-Haut winery in 2007 and was blown away by the wild terroir of the vineyards that besiege the medieval village of Latour de France in the region known as Catalonia, a dramatic place where the snow capped mountains of the pyrennees serrate the southern horizon while the mediterranean twinkles away out to the east. The wines are virtuoso examples of the simultaneously ripe and savoury.

“Occultum Lapidem” from Bila-Haut, vintage 2013, reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck for The Wine Advocate, April 2014, “A step up and an incredible effort…[this wine] is made from a mix of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan that comes from schist and chalky soils. A serious, classically-styled effort, it offers awesome aromas and flavours (blackberry, mineral and licorice), full-bodied richness and fabulous concentration that never comes across as heavy or cumbersome. Showing additional minerality and definition with time in the glass, this beauty will have 10-15 years of longevity and should not be missed.” 94-97 points
