Domaine d'Ourea Gigondas 2016 Grenache Shiraz
Domaine d'Ourea Gigondas 2016, from the highest vineyard in Gigondas. 80% Grenache and 20% Shiraz. Gigondas makes wine of massive fruit ripeness on the eastern edge of the Rhône Valley in the high country that looks out and over Châteauneuf-du-Pape but the vines suffer from heat exhaustion in hot years. However, because the d'Ourea vineyard is the highest altitude and thus coolest in Gigondas, when the heatwave hits (like in 2016) then this is the very best vineyard in the region and achieves wonderful ripeness, depth, and structure but without loosing freshness and precision. It is a vineyard that is naturally adapted to global warming extremes. This is easily the best value-for-money Gigondas I have ever tried with berry-fresh aromatics and spicy notes but the tannins are extraordinary and remind me of Bordeaux and make this an utterly satisfying drink.
’Vivid ruby-red. Lively aromas of cherry, raspberries and garrigue, along with a smoky mineral nuance that adds clarity and lift. Sweet red fruit flavors are given an exotic quality by floral pastille and Asian spice notes that build steadily on the back half. Fine-grained tannins lend shape and gentle grip to the persistent finish, which leaves a suave lavender note behind.’ 91 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous, August 2018.
