Queulat Carmenere Gran Reserva 2015 from Maipo Valley in Chile
Fascinating aromatics with pepper spice, cedar, and polished mahogany, while the palate is more Grand Cru Burgundy than Bordeaux. Medium bodied and the epitome of elegance. Fine tannin structure. Drink now to 2030.
While Carmenère is one of the major varieties of Bordeaux, it is massively overshadowed by plnatings of the Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon, and Merlot. In addition, Carmenère is a variety that has almost never been used to make a single varietal wine in Bordeaux and so it is wonderful that there are other parts of the world where the climate and soil is better suited to getting the best from this variety and use it to make pure expressions of its strong individuality, such as in this 100% Carmenère from Chile.
