1. "Le Ciel Vide" 2017, 80% Shiraz and 20% Grenache. This is a ludicrously good "entry level" red and brings home the point that if you want the best value Rhône-style reds in France then you are far better off shopping in Roussillon where you pay less for the regional reputation and then receive much more from the wine itself. I've never seen a Côtes-du-Rhône that could compete with this: spicy aromatic intensity, controlled, complex, and savoury, while the palate is structured and satisfyingly long. This is a complete wine in every sense that will cellar nicely for up to ten years too. Post-arrival price will be: $23. TODAY'S 15% OFF PRE-DEPARTURE OFFER: $20 per bottle in any dozen($22 if less than 12 bottles ordered). This wine is very nearly sold out from the vineyard too, so make hay as re-ordering at a later date won't be possible.
2. "Le Secret" 2016, 100% Shiraz. Shiraz like this is simply not made in Australia and when it's made in France it comes from Côte-Rôtie and costs over $150 per bottle. The aromatics are precise and spicy, not flamboyantly fruity but utterly compelling and original in a very serious style. This is no fruit bomb at all, quite the reverse in fact, but still awesomely powerful. As with all great wine, it's the palate that makes you realise you are drinking the real deal because the tannin, substance, and extract here is alarmingly, massively determined, chewy and vigorous. Grown in limestone-rich soil that accentuates the savoury "minerality" of wine. An extraordinary Shiraz like no other I've tasted before. Drink now to 2035. Post-arrival price will be: $37.95. TODAY'S 15% PRE-DEPARTURE OFFER: $33 per bottle in any dozen($36 if less than 12 bottles ordered).
3."Motus" 2016, 75% Mourvèdre, 20% Shiraz, 5% Grenache. Perhaps it's the tightening impact of the 20% Shiraz, which, as I've already described for "Le Secret", seems to be the embodiment of fleshy-savouriness at Treloar, but Motus could not be further from the Mourvèdre stereotype of uncontrolled, animal-infused fruitiness. Instead there is a mahogany perfume and precision, a subtle yet steady seriousness to the aromatics, notes of menthol and eucalyptus, and then a palate that is tight, tannic, and endlessly long. Stunning and original. Drink now to 2035+. 13.4% alcohol. Post-arrival price will be: $37.95. TODAY'S 15% PRE-DEPRTURE OFFER: $33 per bottle in any dozen(or $36 if less than 12 bottles ordered).
4. "Tahi" 2012, 60% Shiraz, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache. Here's a wine that transforms the GSM model into something far more stylish than it has ever been before. Just starting to hit its prime now, this is a meaty wine with a wild streak and slightly more palate volume and richness than the Secret and Motus. But the tannin is still emphatic and persistent and makes me think this has at least a decade ahead of it. It's only just 14% but the extract and liveliness on the palate makes it seem Bordeaux-like in its elegance. It's a cliché, but like all the Treloar wines, the Tahi is a testament to terroir and every glass pulls you inextricably into the world of Roussillon and its rocky earth in the cool shade of the Pyrenees. An amazing wine of power, flavour, and finesse. Drink now to 2030. Scored 92 out of 100 by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "full-bodied and firmly built but generous."
Post-arrival price will be: $48.30. TODAY'S 15% PRE-DEPARTURE OFFER: $42 per bottle in any dozen($46 if less than 12 bottles ordered).
And one white wine:
5. "One Block" Muscat 2018. Dry white wine. Yep, this is the same Muscat that can be used to make fortified wines (the fortified wines of Roussillon are the most famous in France), but here it has been fermented dry to make a balanced and refreshing white at 13.3% alcohol, which is typical for wines of this style. There's a subtle hint of muskiness, along with notes of cinnamon and cloves, but it's subtle, dry and highly slurpable. Post-arrival price will be: $21.85. TODAY'S 15% OFF PRE-DEPARTURE OFFER: $19 per bottle in any dozen($21 if less than 12 bottles ordered).
