Clos du Jaugueyron Petit Jaug Margaux 2015
Clos du Jaugueyron "Petit Jaug" Margaux 2015, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot.
Winemaker Michel Théron is the closest to a genius that I have ever come across in the world of winemaking. He completely rejected the winemaking traditions of Margaux, that it would have been far easier (and more profitable) to follow, and innovated a new style instead that is both unprecedented in Bordeaux, and utterly delicious. Throwing away the past is one thing, but knowing what to replace it with is a far more rare skill, and it is one that Michel has in aces. The essence of Michel's new wines is: a complete avoidance of barrel aged character; a lightness of extraction; and a focus on terroir and fruit purity ("letting the vineyard speak"). The "Petit Jaug" 2015 is an elegant drop of ethereal class. The fruit is fine and pure, pretty without richness, aromatic without heaviness, and a seriously satisfying, full to medium-bodied mouthful. The quintessence of Margaux. Certified organic and biodynamic. Drink now to 2027.
