Domaine de Bila Haut l'Esquerda 2017 Shiraz Grenache
I worked as cellar manager at Bila-Haut in 2007 and really got to know the vineyards in this area.
Domaine de Bila-Haut "L'Esquerda" 2017. Shiraz/Grenache (70/30). Unoaked. L'Esquerda is a cool, north-facing vineyard (which means facing away from the sun in the northern hemisphere), which was just what was required in the stinking hot summer of 2017 In cool years L’Esquerda can be a bit of a flake but the 2017 is explosively rich and yet balanced with excellent savoury structure. Indistinguishable from good CNDP or Gigondas. This is a vineyard that is naturally adapted to dealing with climate change. Drink now to 2030. Averages 4.0 out of 5 on Vivino. 92/100 from Robert Parker: "The full-bodied 2017 Cotes du Roussillon Villages l'Esquerda is wonderfully lush, welcoming and supple. Loaded with black cherries and crushed stone, this seductive number adds a dusting of cocoa powder on the long, slightly warm finish." Drink now to 2030. $29.95.
