Eclats de Schistes Saint Chinian Roquebrun 2017 Grenache/Shiraz blend
"Éclats de Schistes" rouge, Saint-Chinian-Roquebrun 2017. 65% Shiraz, 20% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre.
This is quite simply the greatest mediterranean French red I have ever tasted. Impentrable black-purple colour. The single vineyard signature surges from the glass, a fragrant, savoury, earthy, and stony perfume, brambly and herbal, with notes of gunpowder smoke, truffle, and forest floor. At 14.5% this is technically very full bodied but to my palate it tastes about 13-13.5% because there is a fresh minerality and tannin shroud that lashes it all tightly together. This is a very serious bit of wine growing by people who rightly see themselves as guardians of one of the world's greatest Shiraz/Grenache terroirs with the know-how to define and express it with flair. Breathtaking wine.
