Yannick Amirault Bourgueil la Petite Cave 2010 from the loire
Forget any association you might have been the 2010 vintage and big/rich red wines from France because in the Loire, where chalky finesse runs through the veins, even this flagship wine from Yannick Amirault, the area's most macho red-wine architect that I know of, still comes over as tight, refined, medium-bodied, and far from a fruit-bomb. That doesn't mean that it's weak - au contraire! - this is a wine of highly pronounced Cabernet Franc personality (it's 100% Cabernet Franc), raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, and with hordes of complexing notes around the peripheries. The palate is chalky, fresh, and has another 5 to ten years of positive development ahead of it. Drink now to 2030.
